Pentagon estimates cost of war with Iran at $47 billion, US military budget under pressure

Politico website reported, citing informed sources, that the Pentagon and the US Congressional Appropriations Committees are reviewing the country’s military budget at around $1.1 trillion, a figure that is about $400 billion less than the $1.5 trillion budget proposed by US President Donald Trump.

According to this report, Pentagon officials have concluded that Trump’s budget request has virtually no chance of being approved.

Politico reported that the Pentagon has estimated the cost of a war with Iran at at least $47 billion, but this figure has been met with opposition from a number of US senators.

Not long ago, five Democratic senators wrote a letter to the US Central Command (CENTCOM) demanding the public release of an estimate of the damage caused to US military bases in the region.

According to Politico, budget cuts could slow the process of rebuilding America’s weapons stockpiles, which were depleted during the war with Iran, and affect the Pentagon’s ability to purchase new weapons and sign defense contracts.
