Afghan citizen convicted in Virginia federal court
A jury in federal court in the US state of Virginia on Wednesday found Afghan citizen Mohammad Sharifullah guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization.
The accusation was made in connection with the 2021 attack on Kabul airport, an attack in which 13 American soldiers were killed and about 160 Afghan civilians were martyred.
Reuters reported that Mohammad Sharifullah faces up to 20 years in prison, and the judge has not yet set a sentencing date.
According to the jury report, he could not determine whether his actions directly caused the victims’ deaths, which saved him from the possibility of a life sentence.
Previously, the Afghan citizen’s lawyer had said that the United States government had arrested the wrong person and that his confessions were obtained under duress in Pakistan.
