Grossi: Negotiations with Iran are underway; the trigger mechanism is not under my supervision

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, announced in a press conference on Monday (September 8, 2025) that the organization is negotiating with Iran at various levels and that technical meetings have been held with the country’s officials.

He added that he recently had a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and that negotiations are moving in the right direction.

Referring to the recent attacks on Iran and the physical damage and political changes that resulted from them, Grossi emphasized that issues such as the fate of Iran’s enriched uranium reserves are of paramount importance and that negotiations cannot be postponed for weeks or months.

He also stated: “The issue of the trigger mechanism is not under my supervision, but the purpose of political and non-political issues, including the trigger mechanism, is to put us in certain conditions.”

Referring to Iran’s obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Director General of the organization said that the organization’s inspections are mandatory and Iran is legally obligated to cooperate.
