Kuwait’s Emir, Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a legal decree denying citizens who became Kuwaiti citizens through naturalization the right to vote, run for office, and be appointed to parliamentary bodies.
Based on new amendments to the Kuwaiti nationality law, naturalized citizens will no longer have the right to participate in elections, run for elected positions, and be appointed to parliamentary bodies.
Previously, naturalized citizens could vote in elections after 30 years of receiving Kuwaiti citizenship; but the new amendment has also abolished this right and expanded their political restrictions.
