Pentagon fires editor and publisher of US Armed Forces newspaper

The Pentagon has removed the editor and publisher of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, which covers news about the US armed forces, from their duties.

The publication’s editor, Eric Slavin, told the media that he was fired for insubordination after raising his differences with the US Department of Defense and the Pentagon’s attempts to interfere with the newspaper’s news coverage.

Max Lederer, publisher of Stars and Stripes, has also been fired, despite announcing his retirement a few days ago; a reporter for the newspaper also said he was fired for this reason.

The move comes days after a report about the difficult conditions of the crew of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was released, a report that increased criticism of the US war on Iran.

The Stars and Stripes newspaper receives part of its funding from the US Department of Defense, but has always emphasized its editorial independence.
