A massive wildfire on the outskirts of Okanagan Lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia has prompted the immediate evacuation of more than 20,000 residents.
The fire spread rapidly within a few hours, affecting the cities of Summerland and Peachland.
Local officials have called the event one of the fastest and most intense fires in the region’s history and said that a number of residential homes were damaged as a result.
Following the unprecedented spread of the fire, British Columbia authorities have declared a state of emergency; the intensity of the fire is so great that the regional emergency management center has been forced to evacuate.
