The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran has begun a six-day funeral for its leader, a ceremony that Iranian officials describe as a symbol of resistance and opposition to the United States and Israel.
The report states that Iranian officials have predicted that 20 million people will attend mourning ceremonies across the country, a figure that, if realized, would make the ceremony one of the largest funerals in history.
The media outlet added that this figure is double the approximately 10 million people who attended the funeral of Imam Khomeini (RA) in 1989.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that in addition to its mourning aspect, this ceremony also has a political message and is seen by Iran as a show of resistance to American pressure and a celebration of its leader’s political role in the region.
