Eight killed after car hits Buddhist monks’ convoy in Thailand

Eight monks have reportedly been killed after a car crashed into a convoy of Buddhist monks in Mukdahan province in northeastern Thailand.

According to Al Jazeera, the incident occurred on Thursday when about 30 monks and a number of Buddhist followers were on a religious walk towards Ubon Ratchathani province.

Sources said that in addition to the eight deaths, at least 10 to 20 others were injured in the incident; Thai police announced that five monks died at the scene and three others died after being taken to the hospital.

It has also been reported that four people are in critical condition and 10 others are seriously injured.

According to reports, an 11-year-old child who had taken his parents’ car without permission crashed into the convoy after losing control of the vehicle.

Police have said that the child is in custody and will be questioned after the presence of child protection officials.
