US Secretary of War: Efforts for Western Democracy in Afghanistan Were Not Realistic From the Start
In a frank statement, US Secretary of War Pete Hegsett, referring to the long experience of the Afghan war, said that the US effort to rebuild the country’s society and transform it into a Western-style democracy was not realistic from the beginning.
He added: “The idea of changing the structure of Afghan society and creating Western-style institutions and military forces was a form of excessive optimism, and such a plan could never succeed in that country.”
These words are being spoken at a time when, after more than two decades of American military presence in Afghanistan and billions of dollars spent, the country has finally come under the control of the Islamic Emirate and the Western-backed structures have collapsed.
