Reuters news agency claimed that the United Nations Security Council has removed the name of Ahmed al-Sharaa, known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani and the interim president of Syria, from the international sanctions list.
This decision, which was made in the wake of recent developments in Syria and the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government, includes the lifting of sanctions imposed since 2013 against Golani due to his links to al-Qaeda and terrorist groups.
Removing his name from the list would allow access to frozen assets and freedom of international travel.
Reuters reported, citing diplomatic sources, that the move is part of the international community’s efforts to engage with the new Syrian government and support the power transition process.
Several Western and Arab countries had previously called for the lifting of sanctions against Golani.
This news comes as regional countries and global powers are evaluating their policies towards the new Syria.
