Iran’s Foreign Ministry: Security Council Resolution 2231 expired today

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement announcing that United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 2231 regarding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program will expire at the end of its 10-year term on October 18, 2025  and all restrictions and mechanisms related to it will be deemed terminated.

The ministry emphasized that the Iranian nuclear issue should be removed from the Security Council’s agenda and that Iran’s nuclear program should be treated like other non-nuclear-weapon states that are members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Iran noted that the main goal of the resolution was to ensure the peaceful nature of the nuclear program, which was achieved with the approval of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and that there had been no reports of diversion towards weapons.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the violation of sanctions relief commitments by three European countries – Britain, France, Germany, the European Union, and the United States – and considered the irresponsible withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA in 2018 and Europe’s failure to fulfill its commitments to undermine this diplomatic efforts.

The ministry called the illegal move by the three European countries to return expired resolutions through the dispute settlement mechanism ineffective and emphasized that the opposition of China and Russia has prevented any decision by the Security Council in this regard.

Iran called on the Secretary-General to correct incorrect information on the UN website and stressed the need to comply with Article 100 of the UN Charter to prevent confusion in legal proceedings.
