Portugal’s Foreign Ministry announced that the country will recognize Palestine as an independent state on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
According to Reuters, the official statement of this decision will be published tomorrow, as Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel had previously announced.
Rangel had said in recent months that Portugal was considering recognizing Palestine and that this action would be taken in coordination with other European countries.
This decision by Portugal comes at a time when 147 countries around the world have recognized Palestine.
In 2024, the United States denied Palestine full membership in the United Nations, but countries such as Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Armenia recognized Palestine in the same year.
This Portuguese action could increase diplomatic pressure on the Zionist regime and help global efforts to advance a two-state solution.
