UN General Assembly adopts resolution calling for independent Palestinian state without Hamas

According to the Guardian, the United Nations General Assembly on Friday overwhelmingly approved a non-binding resolution that emphasizes the creation of an independent Palestinian state without the presence of Hamas.

The resolution, which was drafted based on the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Resolution of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, was adopted with 142 votes in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions.

This proposal was submitted by Arab countries with the support of France and Saudi Arabia, and in return, it strongly condemns Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The text of the resolution describes Hamas as “terrorist” and calls for the complete disarmament of the movement, the release of all hostages, and the transfer of control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority.

It also emphasizes the establishment of an “interim international stabilization mission” under the supervision of the UN Security Council to protect civilians, strengthen the capacities of the Palestinian State, and ensure security for both sides.
