Former Brazilian president sentenced to 27 years in prison
In an unprecedented ruling, Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison on charges of plotting a coup after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.
According to international media reports, a panel of five judges of the Brazilian Supreme Court convicted Bolsonaro of crimes including membership in an armed criminal organization, attempting to violently overthrow democracy, organizing a coup, damaging state property, and destroying cultural property.
Judge Carman Lucia, one of the panel members, cited extensive evidence that Bolsonaro’s actions were an attempt to undermine Brazil’s democracy and legal institutions.
Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest, had previously faced restrictions, including the use of a mobile phone, for defying judicial restrictions.
This conviction is a turning point in Brazil’s political history and could have profound implications for the country’s political future.
