Escalation of clashes in Erbil: Harki tribe attacks against Barzanis and entry of Iraqi forces
According to news sources, intense armed clashes have begun in the Erbil region, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, between security forces affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by the Barzani family, and members of the Harki clan, led by Khurshid Harki.
The clashes intensified in the Khabat area on the outskirts of Erbil after security forces attempted to arrest Khurshid Harki on charges of civil disputes.
These disputes are over lands that have been disputed for years between the Harki clan and the Barzani family.
In recent weeks, Kurdistan Regional Government positions in Erbil have been targeted several times with mortar and drone attacks.
Local sources reported heavy gunfire that killed at least two people and injured several others.
The Harki clan, which had previously returned to the Kurdistan Democratic Party through mediation, has now created a new crisis in the power structure of the Kurdistan Region through armed resistance against security forces.
