Trump suspends implementation of some tariffs and restrictions on Russia and Iran sanctions

The White House announced that US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to partially implement the sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs foreseen in the law known as the “Russia and Iran Sanctions Act.” This decision was made two days before the new regulations were due to take effect.

According to the White House, Trump considered these exemptions to be in the national interest of the United States and has submitted a certificate of his decision to Congress.

The law, known as the Lindsey Graham Act, would impose heavy tariffs on goods imported from countries that continue to buy Russian oil and gas or are involved in circumventing Moscow’s sanctions.

According to the new decree, some anticipated tariffs, including a 500 percent tariff on Russian goods and a 100 percent tariff on imports from a number of major buyers of Russian oil and gas and countries accused of helping to circumvent sanctions, have been exempted.

The White House has emphasized that this decision does not repeal previous sanctions against Russia imposed under other executive orders. These exemptions will remain in effect as long as the US President or relevant officials deem it appropriate to continue them.

This decision was announced at a time when the recent agreement between Washington and Moscow on the supply of Russian diesel fuel has faced opposition from a number of Republican and Democratic senators, who have called for the full implementation of the sanctions law.
