Firefighters in the US state of Nevada announced on Monday that they have made significant progress in containing the massive Hawk Fire near Reno, a fire that has destroyed dozens of homes and forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes in recent days.
According to reports, firefighters have been able to contain about 27 percent of the fire. The fire, which started near Reno on Saturday, spread quickly through grasslands, dry scrublands, and forests due to strong winds, reaching residential areas.
In less than 48 hours, this fire has burned more than 15,000 acres (about 6,000 hectares) on the outskirts of Reno, one of the major cities in Nevada.
The Truckee Meadows Fire Department chief said at least 32 homes were completely destroyed in the fire and several others were damaged. Officials warned that the damage could increase as they continue to survey the affected areas.
