US-Canada trade talks fail, US imposes 50% tariff

Reuters reported that the United States and Canada failed to reach a trade agreement after several days of talks, and Washington announced that it would impose a 50% tariff on some Canadian imports.

A senior Trump administration official said the tariffs would apply to about $20 billion in Canadian goods and would take effect Saturday morning.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that he has suspended trade talks with the United States and that Ottawa will retaliate “dollar for dollar” against Washington’s new tariffs.

The decision was made after three days of talks between Dominique LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canadian trade with the United States, and Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative in Washington.
