According to reports, the United Nations General Assembly has extended the mandate of the organization’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, for another four years, despite opposition from the United States, Russia, and the Zionist regime.
Reuters reported that in this vote, 144 countries voted in favor of the proposal by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, 10 countries voted against, and 13 countries abstained.
The report adds that Russia’s proposal to extend the Turk mission by just two months until the end of 2026 had previously been opposed by the majority of UN members.
Volker Türk, who has been an outspoken critic of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the Israeli regime’s actions in Gaza, and has also called for an investigation into the deaths of people in US immigration detention centers, faced opposition from all three countries.
Before the vote, the United States had warned that if the mission was extended, Turkey would review its financial funding and cooperation with the United Nations; this vote was seen by observers as a sign of increasing tension between the Donald Trump administration and the United Nations.
Volker Türk, an Austrian lawyer and UN staff member, will be the organization’s first High Commissioner for Human Rights to serve two full four-year terms in the position.
