Deadly explosion at Burundi army ammunition depot kills 13, injures 57
At least 13 people were killed and 57 others injured after a massive explosion at a military base in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi.
Al Jazeera reported that the explosion was the result of an electrical short circuit at the Burundi National Defense Forces (FDNB) ammunition depot.
Burundian army spokesman General Gaspard Baratoza announced that residential homes, private vehicles and military installations were severely damaged or completely destroyed in the incident.
The ammunition depot is located near the Higher Institute of Military Cadres (ISCAM), which is the training center for future army officers.
Burundian President Évariste Ndaishimiye expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and urged citizens to immediately notify authorities if they see unexploded ordnance and to refrain from contacting them.
