US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Israeli President Isaac Herzog, saying he should be ashamed of himself for not pardoning Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump had previously asked Herzog to pardon Netanyahu for corruption cases, a request that was met with widespread negative reaction in the occupied territories.
In response to this attack, the Israeli President’s Office issued a statement emphasizing that Herzog is not influenced by any external or internal pressure.
The statement said that the Prime Minister’s pardon request is being reviewed by the Ministry of Justice in accordance with legal procedures to receive a legal opinion, and only after this process is completed will the President make a decision based on the law, the interests of the country, and his conscience, without being influenced by any foreign or domestic pressure.
Herzog’s office went on to praise Trump’s support for the Zionist regime, claiming: “Israel is independent and governed by the rule of law.”
