US House of Representatives repeals Trump’s tariffs on Canada; Trump threatens opposing representatives
The US House of Representatives voted 219 to 211 on Thursday morning local time to repeal the trade tariffs imposed by Donald Trump against Canada.
The vote came after months of trade tensions between the two neighboring countries and showed a significant divide among Republican lawmakers, with a number of Republicans also voting in favor of lifting the tariffs.
Donald Trump immediately responded with a sharp tone on the social network “Truth Social”, writing: “Canada has been taking advantage of the United States on trade for many years; they are among the worst countries to deal with, especially on our northern border… Tariffs give us an easy win.
The US President also threatened Republican representatives, emphasizing: “Any” Republican who votes against tariffs will face serious consequences in the election, even in the primaries. “No Republican should be responsible for destroying this great privilege.”
The tariff repeal still requires Senate approval and the president’s signature, and with Trump’s threats, there is a possibility that he will veto the bill or pressure the Senate to reject it.
