Trump administration suspends immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Afghanistan
The Donald Trump administration has suspended the processing of immigrant visa applications from citizens of 75 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia.
The US State Department announced that this decision was made to review immigration processes and prevent the entry of individuals who may impose a financial burden on American society in the future.
The US Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Wednesday to review the suspension of the transfer of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders.
Democratic senators called the stop “a betrayal of former Afghan colleagues,” and Delaware Senator Christopher Coons said it was unfair to punish all Afghan allies for one person’s mistake.
Migrant rights activists warned that the suspension had left thousands of Afghan applicants in Pakistan and Qatar in a serious crisis.
Michael Semple also said that visa issuance for Afghans and 74 other countries has completely stopped, frustrating thousands of people.
