NASA Image of the Day :Mysterious shell clouds in the Swedish sky

The colorful and bright clouds that you see in the NASA image of the day covered the sky of northern Sweden and created this mysterious sight.

These clouds, known as Mother-of-Pearl Clouds, are a rare phenomenon.

The image you see was recorded on January 12 this year, when the sun was just below the local horizon.

Shell clouds are a type of polar stratospheric clouds that form in the lower stratosphere at very cold temperatures below minus 78 degrees.

Usually, clouds do not form in the lower stratosphere, but when the temperature is low enough, these strange clouds form and can be seen before sunrise or after sunset
