Nigeria ferry capsizes, killing at least 50, mostly children

At least 50 people, mostly children, have died after a boat carrying passengers capsized in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state.

The incident took place near the Gaurav area in Gorontalo district and search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

According to local sources, the ship was carrying more passengers than its capacity and a number of farmers and workers were on board to harvest rice; reports put the number of passengers at more than 50 to 70.

Officials have said that so far the bodies of about 40 children have been found and 16 others have been rescued from the incident. The number of victims is likely to increase as the operation continues.
