International Organization for Migration reports 2,722 migrants died in Asia Pacific, most victims are Afghans

The International Organization for Migration announced that 2,722 people died or went missing in the Asia-Pacific region during international migration in 2025.

Of this number, 1,492 are Afghan citizens, who make up the largest number; after Afghanistan, Myanmar is in second place with 935 cases.

Most of these incidents have occurred on land routes between Afghanistan and Iran, as well as on sea routes in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

A total of 2,471 people were reported dead or missing in the Asia-Pacific region, including 1,547 in South Asia, 920 in Southeast Asia, and four in East Asia.

The organization emphasized that after recording an unprecedented figure of 2,745 cases in 2024, this is the second consecutive year that the number of migrant deaths has exceeded 2,700.
