Kim Jong-un re-elected as North Korea’s state affairs chief

According to official North Korean media reports, Kim Jong-un was re-elected as the Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea during the first session of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly held in Pyongyang.

This election was made by a unanimous vote of the parliamentarians and demonstrates his continued absolute leadership over the Workers’ Party and the North Korean government.

Kim Jong-un has been the de facto leader of the country since 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, and these positions are officially renewed every five years in the Supreme People’s Assembly.

The meeting also elected or confirmed other key party and government officials, and discussed and approved the new year’s economic and defense plans.

The incident occurred while North Korea continues to vigorously pursue its nuclear and missile weapons program and relations with the United States and its allies remain tense.
