US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) ends its mission after 17 years
The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has announced that the agency will officially end its operations on February 1.
In his closing statement, Seeger expressed his gratitude to all of the organization’s supporters, colleagues, and those who have benefited from the organization’s reports, research, and activities over the past 17 years.
Established in 2008, this institution was tasked with overseeing multi-billion dollar US spending on Afghanistan’s reconstruction, fighting corruption, evaluating development projects, and providing independent reports to the US Congress. It published hundreds of reports critical of the performance of foreign aid in Afghanistan.
Seager’s end comes as the United States no longer has direct reconstruction projects in the country after its full withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, and the focus has shifted to overseeing past aid.
