Death toll from deadly floods in Indonesia’s Sumatra surpasses 1,000
Indonesian authorities announced that the death toll from floods and landslides in three provinces on the island of Sumatra has exceeded 1,000, and 218 people are still missing.
The natural disaster occurred after heavy monsoon rains, exacerbated by a rare cyclone in early December, led to widespread destruction of buildings, power outages and road closures.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, visiting the affected areas yesterday, acknowledged growing despair among victims, saying there had been slight delays in relief operations and problems providing clean water to survivors.
It is worth noting that rescue efforts and searches for the missing are still ongoing.
