British laser weapon successfully destroys drone traveling at 650 km/h
The British Ministry of Defense announced that the advanced DragonFire laser weapon, in its latest tests, succeeded for the first time in this country in tracking and destroying high-speed moving targets “beyond the horizon of vision” with high accuracy, including drones flying at a speed of about 650 kilometers per hour.
In these tests, the Dragonfire laser beam was able to hit a target the size of a coin even from a distance of one kilometer.
At the same time, the British Ministry of Defense has signed a $413 million contract with MBDA UK to install and operate this laser system on the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers from 2027.
British officials have announced that the cost of each Dragon Fire launch is only about 10 pounds (13 dollars), which is a major revolution in reducing defense costs compared to defensive missiles costing several hundred thousand dollars.
The British Ministry of Defense has described the weapon as a “game changer in future air and naval defense.”
