Israeli cabinet approves Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange plan
Israeli media reported that the Israeli cabinet has approved a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and a prisoner exchange with Hamas.
The agreement, which is part of US President Donald Trump’s proposed plan to end the two-year Gaza war, is the first phase and will lead to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza and a prisoner exchange.
According to reports, with the approval of this plan at a cabinet meeting chaired by Netanyahu, the ceasefire will be implemented within the next 24 hours and Israeli forces will withdraw to new lines inside the Gaza Strip.
Hamas is required to release 48 Israeli hostages within the next 72 hours, including 20 who are believed to be still alive. In return, Israel will release approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment and 1,700 Palestinians detained since the beginning of the war.
In a statement after the agreement was ratified, Netanyahu described it as a framework for the release of all hostages, dead and alive, and emphasized that this was the initial step towards ending the war
