North Korea arrests senior engineers after failed ship launch
North Korean state media has reported the arrest of a number of the country’s top engineers after the failure to launch a warship.
North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency reported on Saturday, May 24, that the 5,000-ton ship, which was supposed to be a symbol of the country’s military prowess, capsized during its launch in the presence of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Military experts tell this news agency that the event took place in front of a large crowd of spectators and dealt a major blow to Kim Jong-un’s credibility.
After the incident, Kim Jong-un ordered severe punishment for the perpetrators and demanded that the ship be repaired before the party meeting in June.
It is not yet clear what impact the failed launch incident will have on North Korea’s future displays of military power.
