Trump signs bill tightening sanctions on Russia and Iran

The US House of Representatives passed the bill known as the Lindsey O. Graham Russia and Iran Sanctions Act of 2026 with 262 votes in favor and 159 against, and after passing in the Senate, the bill was signed by US President Donald Trump.

The law imposes new sanctions on Russia’s energy and defense sectors, officials, banks, and the country’s so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers, and gives the US president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on imports from countries that are major buyers of Russian oil and gas.

Another part of the law relates to Iran, and the law extends sanctions on Iran for another five years, a move that continues US legal restrictions on Iran’s energy and weapons sectors.
