Daniel Driscoll, the top US War Department official for ground forces, has resigned after months of tension with Secretary of War Pete Hegsett; Reuters reported that it was not yet clear whether the White House had accepted the resignation.
The main differences between Driscoll and Hegsett reportedly centered on reform, modernization, and military readiness; Driscoll also raised concerns about the removal of a number of generals who were responsible for military transformation programs.
Driscoll, who was confirmed for the position in February 2025, focused on providing cheaper military equipment and increasing the agility of the US military, and also played a diplomatic role in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
He, who has close ties to Vice President Jeddah Vance, is the latest senior Pentagon official to step down amid sweeping changes in US military leadership.
