Rescue teams in Nepal are using heavy machinery to search through mud and debris from flash floods, as hopes of finding survivors dwindle and the risk of further flooding increases.
Reuters reported that the death toll in the incident in Nepal has reached 469, and nearly 1,000 others are missing in Nepal and Tibet. At least 540 of the missing are foreigners.
The flood occurred after a glacier collapsed on Wednesday, sending huge volumes of ice, mud and debris into Himalayan mountain lakes. The event has devastated a number of villages and valleys and damaged power plants, roads and bridges.
Nepalese authorities are continuing to search for survivors and deliver emergency aid to thousands of stranded people using helicopters.
At the same time, Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority has warned that the water level of a newly formed lake is rising and there is a possibility of it breaking due to the blockage of Bhutkoshi Lake with debris.
