Explosion and fire at Venezuela’s second-largest refinery halts operations

Following a fire and several explosions at Venezuela’s Cardon refinery, the country’s second largest refinery has been shut down.

According to Reuters, the fire started in a gas transmission line connected to the diesel refining section, and after that, all refinery facilities, including boilers, ceased operation.

The Cardon refinery has a capacity of 310,000 barrels of oil per day, and is part of the Paraguana refinery complex with a total capacity of about 955,000 barrels per day.

After the explosions, employees were evacuated from the site and the fire was contained in less than an hour. Venezuelan officials said no one was injured in the incident and an investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing.
