The costly US withdrawal from Iraq: 23 years of war, 4,500 deaths and nearly $3 trillion in costs

After more than two decades of US military presence in Iraq, the last of the country’s troops and equipment have left the Erbil air base, and Operation “Integrity Resolve” in Iraq has ended. Reuters has reported that the number of American soldiers killed in more than two decades of war in Iraq is around 4,500.

This withdrawal comes at a time when, according to Brown University’s Costs of War project, the cost of the wars in Iraq and Syria is estimated to be about $1.79 trillion by 2023, and when future costs of veterans’ care are included, this figure will reach about $2.89 trillion.

The United States entered the war by invading Iraq in 2003. American forces withdrew from the country in 2011, but returned to Iraq in 2014 to fight ISIS, and are now once again ending their military presence.

In response to the end of the country’s military presence in Iraq, US President Donald Trump described the withdrawal of troops as “the end of a very expensive journey” and said: “We are coming home.”

Meanwhile, American officials have described the end of this mission as the result of the defeat of ISIS and the transfer of security responsibility to Iraqi forces.
