Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for comprehensive reforms in the UN Security Council and the abolition of permanent members. He said the current structure of the Security Council continues to reflect the post-World War II world order.
Repeating the slogan “The world is bigger than five,” Erdogan said that global decision-making should include broader participation from different countries and regions, and responsibilities in the international system should be distributed more fairly.
The Turkish President stressed that UN reforms should become a concrete roadmap and that the abolition of the right and the need to be at the center of this process; he added that simply increasing the number of permanent members of the Security Council will not solve the concentration of power in the hands of a limited number of countries.
Erdogan has also proposed that Security Council members be elected for specific terms by the UN General Assembly and that the role and authority of the General Assembly in international decision-making be increased.
