First place in the 2026 Nikon Small World Competition went to a scientific video that captured the beating of the lung cilia of a child with a rare respiratory disease. Researchers used a new method of controlling light to record this movement without damaging the cells.
Other outstanding works have shown images of the movements of jellyfish larvae in water droplets, the life of a tube worm alongside unicellular organisms, the simultaneous division of adjacent cells, and the movement of mitochondria in a plant leaf.
