US President Donald Trump has announced that Washington has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland under which the United States will have permanent control over security and defense needs in Greenland.
Trump has said the agreement addresses US concerns about Greenland and allows Washington to “permanently take the necessary steps to ensure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States.”
He also claimed that after the implementation of this agreement, no country that Washington considers a rival or enemy will be allowed to establish a military base, deploy forces, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without written US consent.
The Danish and Greenlandic governments have said that the defense agreement is scheduled to be signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly; however, its implementation requires approval by the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments.
