Reuters reported that Mita has reached agreements with nearly every US state to pay up to $18 billion over the next ten years to resolve lawsuits alleging that Facebook and Instagram were designed to be addictive for children.
Based on this agreement, teenagers’ use of Facebook and Instagram will be limited to two hours a day, and they will not be able to access these networks from midnight to six in the morning without parental consent.
Mita is also disabling most push notifications for teenage users during school hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is increasing measures to prevent children from accessing age-restricted content.
The settlement ends a federal trial over allegations that Facebook and Instagram harmed children, but does not include all legal cases against Mita. The company has denied any wrongdoing while accepting the settlement.
