Ten climbers, including renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, have reportedly died following an avalanche on Mount Brood Peak in northern Pakistan.
The Associated Press reported that the group was caught in a snowstorm on Thursday, and Elite Expeditions confirmed the deaths of all members of the team, calling it a great loss to the global mountaineering community.
Rescue teams recovered four bodies on Friday, but only three were recovered due to difficult weather conditions. The search and recovery operation for the remaining bodies continued with the support of Pakistani army helicopters.
Nirmal Purja, also known as “Nimz Day,” set a historic record in 2019 by climbing 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in 189 days. His life and achievements are also reflected in the Netflix documentary “14: Nothing is Impossible Peaks.”
Pakistani mountaineering officials have considered this incident an irreparable loss to the global mountaineering community and have appreciated the efforts of the rescue and military forces in the rescue operation.
