Guterres condemns Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Israeli settlers’ attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including the burning of two mosques, the destruction of personal property, and attacks on Palestinian livelihoods.

UN spokesman Farhan Haq called the attacks on religious sites “repugnant and unacceptable” and warned that continuing these actions could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region; Guterres also called for the perpetrators of these attacks to be identified and held accountable in accordance with international law.

At the same time, Ramez al-Akbarov, the UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, announced that the security situation in the West Bank is rapidly deteriorating and that the possibility of conflict escalation will increase in the absence of urgent measures.

Referring to the situation in Gaza, he said that despite some progress in the field of health services and cleanup, the process of recovery and reconstruction in this area is still very slow and does not meet the extensive needs of the people.
