German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius held US President Donald Trump responsible for paving the way for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the recent tensions in this strategic port are a consequence of Washington’s policies.
Pistorius stated: “Ultimately it was Trump who paved the way for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, not us, but now we all want it to be reopened.”
According to him, Iran had previously agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz based on an initial agreement between Trump and the doctors, and ship traffic had gradually resumed.
However, Iran announced on Saturday that the important seaport had been closed again following Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
The German Defense Minister emphasized that opening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the safe passage of ships is of vital importance for Europe’s energy security and the continent’s economic recovery.
