Explosion at explosives depot in Myanmar kills and injures more than 120

Media reports have reported that at least 55 people have been killed and more than 70 others injured after an explosives warehouse exploded near the Chinese border in Myanmar.

According to reports, the victims include 25 women, 30 men and six children; about 100 houses were also damaged in the incident and rescue operations are still ongoing.

The explosion occurred in the village of Kaung That, in the area controlled by the Ta Aung Liberation Army; images posted on social media showed large plumes of smoke and several secondary explosions.

Confirming the incident, the Ta Ang group stated that the stored explosives were used for mining activities and that the incident was an unintentional one.

Local authorities have said that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion and that those responsible for the incident will be held accountable.
