Widespread flooding in eastern Syria, the situation in Deir Ezzor and Raqqa became critical

Following heavy rainfall and increased flooding from Turkish soil, a critical situation has arisen in the provinces of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa in eastern Syria.

Reports indicate that for the first time since 1981, the spillway gates of the Euphrates Dam or the Tabqah Hydroelectric Power Plant have been opened to control the hydrological situation and contain the rise in water levels.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that specialized military units have been quickly dispatched to the affected areas and that army forces are building embankments and protective dams to contain the floods.

According to Syrian officials, military forces are also participating in evacuating residents from flooded areas and providing emergency aid to civilians.
