US and Russian delegations meet in Geneva to negotiate multilateral nuclear arms control treaty

Reuters reported, citing a senior US State Department official, that US and Russian delegations met in Geneva on Monday to discuss a new, multilateral version of the nuclear arms control treaty.

The news agency added that the United States will hold talks with the Russian delegation on Monday and with the Chinese delegation on Tuesday in Geneva to pave the way for the possible conclusion of such a treaty.

Earlier in February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Moscow was ready to discuss security issues with the United States within the framework of the Strategic Stability Dialogue and would await the readiness of the American side.

These meetings are taking place at a time when previous arms control treaties, such as New START, are facing challenges and efforts to create a new multilateral framework involving the United States, Russia, and China have increased.
