Putin : new US sanctions against Cuba unacceptable; Moscow-Havana relations on positive track
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in the Kremlin, called the new US restrictions against the country “unacceptable” and emphasized that Russia does not accept any of these measures.
Reuters reported that the meeting took place on Wednesday (February 18), and Putin described Russian-Cuban relations as on a “positive path.”
A senior Russian diplomat had previously announced that Moscow would provide material assistance to Havana to thwart US efforts to restrict Cuba’s oil supplies.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a separate meeting with his Cuban counterpart that Moscow has called on the United States to refrain from imposing a complete naval blockade on Cuba and instead engage in negotiations.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the issue of Cuba has not yet been discussed with Washington. The meeting took place at the same time as the trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States in Geneva.
