Tariq Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh PM, major political upheaval after tense period

Tariq Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was officially sworn in as the country’s prime minister on Tuesday , an event that is considered one of the most important political developments in Bangladesh after years of tension and unrest.

Rahman, 60, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and assassinated President Zia-ur-Rehman, took over the reins of government after his party’s landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections.

The swearing-in marks the end of a long period of political crisis, widespread protests and government changes in Bangladesh, and Rahman’s new government is expected to focus on strengthening the economy, fighting corruption and rebuilding foreign relations.
