Fire breaks out at Cuba’s largest oil refinery, Nico Lopez, in Havana

Cuban news sources and officials reported a massive fire at the Nico Lopez Oil Refinery, the country’s largest oil refining complex in Havana Bay. The incident occurred on Friday 13th of February , and a huge column of black smoke covered the sky over the capital.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is underway. Fortunately, firefighters were able to contain the flames and no reports of casualties have been reported so far.

The fire occurred as Cuba faces its worst fuel shortage in years, a crisis that officials say is the result of US sanctions and severe restrictions on oil imports.

The Nico Lopez refinery plays a key role in Cuba’s domestic fuel supply, and any disruption could exacerbate long gasoline lines and widespread power outages.
